Anyone who believes a garden is a healing place and embraces the power in a flower will enjoy Sarah Addison Allen's 2007 debut novel, Garden Spells. This book was on the bestseller lists of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and earned praise from Booklist, Publisher's Weekly, and Library Journal. Ms. Allen tells a charming story about the Waverly sisters who have been separated by time, place, and personality. The older sister, Claire, uses her cooking skills and catering business to embrace the mysterious Waverly family talents, while Sydney, the younger sister, has put as much distance between her family and those gifts as she can. However, a threat to her 5 year old daughter, Bay, compels Sydney to return home. Dire straights, loneliness, a magical apple tree, and a pinch of romance are the ingredients to healing and reconciliation. If you enjoy this book, I recommend you try Ms. Allen's second book, The Sugar Queen, too. Since I loved both books, I am eagerly awaiting her third novel, The Girl Who Chased the Moon, due out in March 2010.
