Ace real estate agent Melanie Middleton lives in a brand new condo with ultra modern furniture. When she walks through the historic sections of Charleston she keeps her eyes straight ahead and away from the porches and windows of old buildings. She has the ability to see ghosts and if she can avoid looking at them she can ignore the silent pleas for help from the restless ones. But then she inherits an historic mansion and its secrets and she can't avoid the dead anymore. Two (living) men also come into her life with this inheritance with hidden motives. Even readers (like me) who are not usually romance or paranormal fiction readers will enjoy this mystery/romance/ghost story with its detailed descriptions of the city of Charleston.
Meredith and Nina are sisters whose lives took them in different directions. Meredith stayed home and took over the family business, while Nina became a photo journalist who travels the world looking for the next big story. When their father becomes ill he asks his daughters to take care of their mother who has never been known to show affection to her daughters. On his death bed, he asks his daughters to listen to the fairy tale their mother (Anya) would tell them as children, but this time they needed to hear it to the end, a fairy tale that would end up being Anya’s life story through WWII. This is a very touching story of a family brought together by tragedy.
Dr. Elton Lehman and his bride decided to begin his medical career in Mount Eaton, Ohio, in the summer of 1964. Fresh out of medical school and residency, they bought a Victorian home with rooms for a doctor’s office attached. They considered this an ideal place to raise a family. He began his career with the sign “E. D. Lehman, Osteopathic Physician, General Practice” posted in a yard with a hitching post for buggies. This book tells of many of Dr Lehman’s experiences in his more than 34 years as a country doctor among an Amish community. He maintained he could learn something from each of his patients. Even the Amish man who put his son’s hand in a bucket of kerosene to keep infection from setting in after the boy cut off several fingers. When he began, he insisted that a hospital was the proper place for childbirth. After attending home births for many years, he ended up creating a home birthing center in Wayne County, Ohio. He once arrived at a home to attend a birth on fire truck in the middle of a blizzard. Eventually, he purchased a jeep so he could make house calls in winter. His patients thought he could stitch up any wound. He discovered a very rare blood type among the Amish community. He was named 1998 Country Doctor of the Year.
The Ox-Bow Incident is an American Western novel written in 1940 by Walter Van Tilburg Clark. The novel is a story of a posse formed to hunt down and “string-up” a gang of rustlers that has allegedly stolen the cattle of a local rancher and murdered him. The story centers on two cowboys who “fall-in” with the posse. The novel was published shortly after a mob in California lynched two suspected kidnappers in front of a county jail.he author shows how the institutions of the society of a small town struggle to keep the posse from turning to savagery. The law, courts, religion, reason, and an honest citizenry are all represented by key characters. The Ox-Bow Incident was considered the best novel of 1940 by critics. In 1943, the novel was made into a popular film with Henry Fonda and Harry Morgan playing the two main characters. If you want to read a western novel with moral depth, The Ox-bow Incident is for you.
After hearing about the upcoming release of Seal's CD "Soul II" I had to revisit his 2008 release, "Soul". Songs written by Otis Reading (I've been loving you too long), Ben E. King (Stand by me), Al Green (I'm still in love with you), and other R&B artists of the 60s and 70s make this a nostalgic listening experience, presented with emotion and passion few artists can convey. All of the songs are covers, but with producer David Foster, Seal has added his own touch to each song. If you like the "old school" classics, you will enjoy listening to this CD.
This gorgeous graphic novel tells the story of two child slaves as their relationship matures and changes over the course of many years together and apart. When Dodola is nine years old, a drought parches the land and her impoverished parents sell her into marriage. Three years later her husband is assaulted and she is taken by slavers. While waiting to be sold, a young baby whom nobody will claim begins crying and to prevent him from being killed by the slavers, Dodola claims Zam as her brother. They escape and spend many years together in the desert until they are again parted by slavers. Woven throughout the book are stories from the Qur’an and the Bible that Dodola tells Zam, often telling the same story from both a Muslim and Christian point of view. The book tells Dodola’s and Zam’s stories through scenes that move back and forth in time, illuminating the story in a way that wouldn’t have been possible if it had been told in a strictly linear fashion. This is a powerful novel that explores themes related to child slavery, love, belief, treatment of women, and abuse of our natural resources.Read a good book or trying to remember a book and are now looking for a type of plot?
