What is Interlibrary Loan? Interlibrary loan allows patrons to obtain items not owned by the Dayton Metro Library (DML) from other libraries around the country. Patrons are limited to 8 requests at a time, with an average delivery time of 2 to 3 weeks. With a few exceptions, most items can be sent to a local library branch for pick-up.
Who can use Interlibrary Loan? Patrons with an active DML card and less than $10.00 in fines are eligible for ILL services.
What items can I request? You can request books, photocopies of magazine and newspaper articles, and census and genealogical microfilm. You cannot request audiovisual material (i.e. videos, records, CDs, slides), manuscript collections, hard copy issues of magazines or newspapers, computer software, or items that DML owns or has on order.
How much does this service cost? That depends. We have a service charge of $.50 cents per item. DMCPL tries to borrow from libraries that do not charge us. We can usually obtain books for free, but most libraries charge between $5-$10 for photocopy requests. You are responsible for all charges levied by the lending library. You pay for your items when you pick them up.
How do I place a request? You can place a request in person at any DML location, or you can call 937-496-8910. We also accept mail and fax requests (937-496-4304). Be sure to give us your name, address, library card number, phone number, detailed information about the item(s) you are requesting, and the dollar amount you would be willing to pay for your item(s). If your item must be paid for in advance (as with genealogy microfilm), please come to the Main Library to place your request.
How long can I keep the material? All items will be checked out for 21 days and are eligible for one renewal subject to the approval of the lending library. Most libraries that lend mircrofilm and rare or old books request that you view items in the library only; you may not take them home. Photocopies are yours to keep. You may return your items to any branch.
Can I renew? Interlibrary loan items are eligible for one renewal subject to the approval of the lending library. What if I'm late returning an item, or it is lost or stolen? Our late fines are $.10 per day per item with a maximum of $5.00 per item. Contact us immediately if your material is lost or stolen. You are financially responsible for lost or stolen items, including items lost in the mail. We will contact the lending library, and they will notify us of the cost of replacing the item.
